A new online platform for thousands of clinical trials could aid in disease research

A new online platform created by Vivli, a nonprofit based in Cambridge, Massachusetts has been launched with the aim to expand the efforts of the companies to share anonymized patient data from clinical trials by offering a one-stop solution for those who want to utilize these data for new insights.

The platform debuts with the access to more than 4000 clinical trial data sets from eight companies and non-profit organizations and encourages the drug developers to share trial data even with negative results and findings that show no benefit with the treatment.. The advantage with the platform is that it features tools for combining and analyzing the data all in one place. This is the first time that such kind of platform has been made available. The new platform will streamline researchers’ ability to find, request, and combine data from several sites as well as list data deposited elsewhere and host data sets. It has been observed that about 2500 data sets are listed on the Vivli site from amongst more than 4000 studies. One of the example of famous pharmaceutical company using Vivli platform is GlaxoSmithKline which has allowed the platform to list 2000 of its data sets.

Independent panel will review some of the requests sent to Vivli however it will refer others to the sites that hold the data. Membership cost includes $2000 to $4500 per study for storage and sharing services for academic researchers whereas data miners can freely access the site is basic tools for a year after which they will be charged daily fee of $12.
